AI
Connect a model, local or remote, and let Nifty title your untitled notes.
AI in Nifty is off until you add a model and turn a task on. Today it does one thing: it gives notes without a title a short one. You choose which model, and it can run on your own machine.
What AI does
Note titles. Write a note without a title and, about 10 minutes after you stop editing, Nifty asks your model for one (at most eight words, in the note's language). As the note grows, the title is kept up to date.
- A title AI wrote has a sparkle beside it in lists, and Title by AI above the note.
- Write, change or clear a title yourself and AI leaves that note alone for good.
- Very short notes (under 20 characters) aren't titled.
Add a provider
A provider runs the models. To keep everything on your own machine, use Ollama.
- Open Settings → AI and choose New provider (N). With none yet, Add Ollama fills it in for you.
- Give it a Name and choose its Type: OpenAI-compatible (OpenAI, Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, vLLM) or Anthropic.
- Enter its URL, including the version, as in
http://localhost:11434/v1. Anthropic's fills in for you. - Add an API key if it needs one (OpenAI and Anthropic do; Ollama and LM Studio don't).
- Choose Test connection, then Save.
The URL is reached from the machine running Nifty's server, so localhost means that machine. With the Mac app
keeping your data on your Mac, that's your Mac.
Add models
- On the provider's card, choose Add models.
- Tick the models it lists, or type one under Add by name, exactly as the provider names it (such as
llama3.2:3b). - Choose the button that counts them, such as Add 2 models.
From a model's ⋯ menu you can Try it… with a prompt of your own (nothing is saved), Make default, Rename… or Remove….
Turn on note titles
- Under Default model, choose the model AI features use.
- Under Tasks, turn on Note titles.
- To title the notes you already have, choose Title … untitled notes. Each title appears in Notes once it's written.
Each task can use its own Model instead of the default. Options… sets Reasoning (turn it off for quicker answers) and Max reply tokens.
If a provider stops answering, its card says when the last request failed and why. Choose Check again once it's back.
Privacy
- Nothing is sent anywhere until you add a provider and turn a task on.
- For a title, Nifty sends the note's text to the model you chose: up to 8,000 characters, with people, tags and projects by name. Images aren't sent.
- With a local provider such as Ollama, your notes never leave your machines. With a remote one, such as OpenAI or Anthropic, the text goes to that company under its terms.
- API keys are stored encrypted on your server and never shown again after you save them.
