Categories and pins
File each note under one category, and pin the notes you keep coming back to.
A category says what a note is about, like Work or Family: one per note, with its own colour. A pin keeps a note handy, on Today and under Pinned.
Give a note a category
- In the editor, choose Add category under the title (or the category already there).
- Type to find one, then press ↵. No category takes it off.
To make a new one, type its name and choose Create “…”. It gets a colour of its own; change it, or add an icon, in Settings → Categories.

With the category focused, press ↓ or a letter to open the list straight away.
Browse by category
Under Search notes, choose a category to see only its notes. All shows everything again. In a note, choose its category, above the title, to do the same.
Manage categories
Open Settings → Categories.
- New category (N): a name, a colour and, if you like, an icon.
- The pencil edits one; the bin deletes it. Its notes stay, without a category. This can't be undone.
- Drag a category, or use the arrows, to change the order. The order is how they appear in Notes.
Pin a note
In a note, choose the pin beside Edit note, or press P. Press it again to unpin. It's also File → Pin note (Unpin note when pinned).
Pinned notes:
- show a pin in every list,
- are all under Pinned above the notes list,
- appear on Today's Pinned tile (the latest six; Show all lists the rest). See Today.
